Mittens and afghans in basic black

Don't you love it when you get a brain blast for a project? Do you ever get that feeling of excitement, when you get an idea that just shows up in your brain, like a real picture? Well, I got that yesterday. It was for my College afghan, to be known from now on as my "U-ghan." (you know, U for university).

This whole thing started when I got my financial information from my favorite college. good news, I got $5,500. Bad news? It's all loans, even though they can be forgiven, and it's for a school that's $32,625+! Ouch! No way am I going there now! Strangely, I'm at peace with going to the other school, which is a small university in Eastern Oregon. For the first time, I feel really at peace about going there. My best friend is going there, too, which makes it an added bonus.

Anyway, another thing that brought about this spurt of amazingness is my Spanish project. My Spanish teacher has encouraged me to use my passion (knitting) and incorporate it in my life. Which is what I intend on doing. But I don't think I really, truly understood until I decided that instead of doing a poster for a presentation, I'd knit a little quilt, with little bits of scrap yarn that I have lying around. It was fun, and I enjoyed bragging that I was doing my homework whilst I was knitting. It's a cute little thing (which I turned in today) and I'm proud of it.

I thought about asking for it back, since the little piece has symbolic meaning about my past, present, and future (which was what my project was about. It was dealing with the present and past subjunctive), and BANG! I was hit with the idea. I'm going to pick up stitches along each side, and knit myself an afghan around the little set of 9 squares, and the rest of it will be a lovely woolly black. Eastern Oregon's cold, so I decided long ago to make a U-ghan.

And now, all I have to do, is figure out if this U-gahn is going to be in rib, knit-purl squares, or in Stockinette st. with a border. I'll ask my local yarn store's guru about it on Wednesday (which will be a good excuse to go and knit as well for knit night!)

Also, the mittens. I want to make some EZ mittens, and I found the perfect ones. I'm also going to make a lovely hat to go with it, which will be very cute and 20's. or maybe a little older. I don't know, I'll have to check, but I'm pretty sure that it'll be the robin's blue egg hat, which has a belt and a button, and will look absolutely divine in black, maybe with a lovely pink belt. I can hardly wait to buy the black yarn!

Congratulations on your university future, and best wishes, too! The U-ghan sounds like a great idea. Please post a picture of it when you can. Happy knitting! :-)
